Most Memorable Engagement Scenes in Hollywood
Looking for some proposal ideas, or just a movie to satisfy your inner romantic? Here are some of the most memorable engagement scenes ever to grace the silver screen.
Love stories and romantic movies are one of Hollywood's specialties. In order to woo audiences and keep them coming back for more, screenwriters and directors are always coming up with inventive new ways to ask those four words, "Will you marry me?" Here are six of the most memorable engagement scenes to grace the silver screen thus far.
When Harry Met Sally
Of course, the most famous scene in When Harry Met Sally is, hands down, the scene where Sally fakes an orgasm in the diner. That particular scene made the movie an instant classic with all women, even now, more than 20 years later. However, When Harry Met Sally also has one of the most memorable proposal scenes in Hollywood, when Harry tells Sally all of the silly stuff he's come to love about her. "I came here tonight," he tells her, "because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible." Who could say no to that?
Stepmom
One of the most beautiful proposal scenes in any movie is the one in Stepmom. After waking her up with a kiss, Luke gives Isabel a ring box that contains a spool of thread. While tying the thread around her finger, he tells her that the first time he got married, he let the thread break. He promises Isabel he won't do the same with her, and then slides the ring down the thread and onto her finger. Only then does he ask, "Will you marry me?" And of course, her answer is, "Yes." Wouldn't yours be?
Pride and Prejudice
Pride and Prejudice is a classic novel of wit and love, but luckily the 2005 movie changes the proposal scene a little bit. Instead of the failed proposal in the drawing room while Elizabeth is visiting a friend, the film gives us a romantic proposal in the rain. The dialogue and end result is much the same, as Elizabeth turns Mr. Darcy down after he tells her that he has fallen for her "against his better judgment," but the effect is very different. Mr. Darcy's impassioned plea, and Elizabeth's heated response, all against the backdrop of the pouring rain, creates one of the most memorable failed proposals in the history of Hollywood.
The Proposal
Of course, with a name like "The Proposal," it would be hard not to include this movie on the list. Suddenly faced with deportation and losing her job because of an expired visa, Margaret lies and claims to be engaged with Andrew, one of her employees. As part of the act, she accompanies him on a visit to his family. Although they start out despising one another, by the end of the visit they've discovered a mutual attraction. To prevent deportation from ruining their budding relationship, Andrew proposes for real, with the whole office looking on: "Marry me, because I'd like to date you." It may be one of the strangest movie engagement scenes in Hollywood history, but it's sweet!
Gone with the Wind
Who can forget the proposal scene from one of the most famous epic romances of all time? Of course, it seems more like an argument than a proposal, since Rhett and Scarlett are constantly butting heads. "I can't go all my life waiting to catch you between husbands," Rhett tells her, but when she refuses to believe him he gets down on his knees and makes a mockery of every girl's dream of a romantic proposal. Finally, after being kissed soundly, Scarlett agrees to marry him, for practical reasons. "I'm not in love with you any more than you are with me," Rhett admits, and it's decided. Even if Rhett is sarcastic and Scarlett is manipulative, however, the love story in Gone with the Wind is one of the most enduring of all time.
Jerry Maguire
Another of the most famous Hollywood engagement scenes of all times is the one in Jerry Maguire, where Jerry tells Dorothy, "You complete me." What girl wouldn't want to hear those three little words? And Dorothy does the unthinkable, interrupting his romantic speech with what has become one of the most famous lines: "You had me at hello." This beautiful, poignant exchange was just one of the things that made Jerry and Dorothy one of America's favorite movie couples for many years.
There are of course many more memorable proposal scenes in movies, but these are six of the top choices from movie buffs and romantic movie fans. Hollywood has a flair for the dramatic, and as a result there are many engagement scenes to choose from. Which are your favorites? Do you have any to add to this list?
